The big hits and excitement of Dream11 Super Smash are returning to Saxton Oval — and this time, the CENTRAL STAGS are bringing the CENTRAL HINDS with them!
The Hinds will play a Domestic T20 at our Nelson home ground for the first time on 21 January 2023 when our twin Central teams host the Otago Sparks and Volts in the new Super Smash season, announced today.
The Stags and Hinds launch their short format campaigns just after Christmas on 27 December 2022, against Wellington in Palmerston North — looking to “fill the Fitz” with our Palmy army again, after having attracted the country’s biggest crowd last season and smashed the attendance record at Fitzherbert Park.
From Palmy, the teams will head up to New Plymouth for the traditional holiday season fiesta at Pukekura Park, hosting the Canterbury Magicians and Kings on 30 December, and the Northern Brave men and women on New Year’s Eve 31 December.
That’s followed by a 5 January doubleheader at the same venue against the always polished Auckland Hearts and Aces, and throughout this holiday season period spectators will be able to pop across to see the famous Festival of Lights right next door after the cricket finishes.
Our players will have the luxury of home crowd support for their first four games of the 2022/23 season, with the first away match not popping up until 7 January — when the Stags and Hinds head across the border to the Basin Reserve.
Doubleheaders at Kennard’s Hire Outer Oval at Eden Park (Auckland, 14 January), Hagley Oval (Christchurch, 27 January), University of Otago Oval (Dunedin, 29 January) and Seddon Park (3 February, Hamilton) round out the T20 regular season before the Finals.
Central Districts Cricket CEO Lance Hamilton said it is exciting to be able to take the live Super Smash match experience to the Nelson audience after an absence of four years.
“The last time the Stags played a T20 match in Stoke, it was a great occasion — a thrilling eight-run win for the boys against the Firebirds.
"Since that time, there has been a lot of positive growth locally in the Nelson Cricket area — particularly in girls’ and women’s cricket.
“Dream11 Super Smash is an opportunity to continue to inspire all the up-and-coming cricketers in the Tasman region now, showcasing the skill level, fun and excitement in our Domestic game to, hopefully, attract some of our budding cricketers of tomorrow.”
Hamilton acknowledged that CD’s Hawke’s Bay fanbase would naturally be disappointed to miss out on hosting a home Super Smash doubleheader this season but, with three Central Stags Ford Trophy one-dayers and the four-day Plunket Shield scheduled for McLean Park this summer — all of them free admission — there will still be even more matches to enjoy in Napier this summer, and there are plans for a fun Meet the Stags event for young autograph-hunters to see their idols up close.
